The Mad Hannans at the Sweetwater in Mill Valley, the earliest of the band’s five Sweetwater shows in the archive and its second-earliest recording overall, after Marin Brewing Co. in April 1998. Several originals turn up here earlier than on any other tape in the collection, among them “Hear Me,” “Nicolai,” “Friend,” “Woman,” and “Everything Reminds Me of You.”
Covers include the Eagles’ “Peaceful Easy Feeling,” the Rolling Stones’ “Far Away Eyes,” Van Morrison’s “Into the Mystic,” and Gary Lee and the Showdown’s “The Rodeo Song.”
A note on the source: this is a soundboard recording, but the only copy known to survive is a set of compressed AAC files ripped in 2012 from a disc titled “Live At Sweetwater 12-03-98.” The FLAC downloads are a lossless copy of that lossy source, not a lossless master. The board mix leans toward the right channel throughout and has been left as recorded, except on the opener, “Plastic Lemons,” which comes from a separate rip.
